2025 IRISH OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Saturday, April 12th – Wednesday, April 16th Sport Ireland National Aquatic Centre, Dublin, Ireland LCM (50m) SwimSwam Preview Meet Central Psych Sheet Day 1 Recap Results – Meet Mobile: Irish Open Championships 2025

Day two of the 2025 Irish Open Championships took place last night in Dublin and avworld-leading time was put up by Daniel Wiffen en route to winning the men’s 800 free.

24-year-old Olympic champion Wiffen stopped the clock at a mark of 7:41.52, the 4th-best time of his career.

That overtook the previous #1 time in the world which sat at the 7:45.02 Aussie Sam Short established at the Pro Swim Series stop in Sacramento last month.

Wiffen made history at the 2024 Olympic Games by becoming Northern Ireland’s first Olympic gold medalist since 1972. He earned gold in the men’s 800m freestyle and doubled up with bronze in the 1500m freestyle in Paris.

Ahead of these Championships, Wiffen wasn’t shy about revealing his world record-setting goals, saying, “I want to be a full-time world record holder and that’s what my goals are now, going forward.

“I hold one world record already. I want three more and I want them within the next four years, so that’s what my goal is.”

Wiffen’s 800m free lifetime best rests at the 7:38.19, the current European and Olympic record. He owns the short course meters 800 freestyle World Record, courtesy of the 7:20.46 posted at the 2023 European Championships.

After his performance last night, Wiffen told Swim Ireland, ‘This is the first time I’m going to say this on camera, I am quite disappointed.

‘For me, the way I’ve been training I was expecting quite a bit faster but if I look at the time itself it’s the same (time) I won the World Championships in, it’s within .2 of a second off, it’s still quite a good time to win the Irish Championships gold.

‘It’s amazing seeing this many people in the NAC, I’ve never seen so many people at an Irish Open. I loved it, it’s great to see the crowds come out and watch Ireland’s best swimmers.’
