BCCI seeks clarity from govt for India vs Pakistan match in Asia Cup 2025 ...Middle East

Sport by : (Inside sport) -

With three months left for the Asia Cup 2025, official broadcaster Sony released a promotional poster, featuring India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. However, the 2nd biggest team in Asia, Pakistan, went missing. While many speculated that the Asia Cup would happen without Pakistan, all the rumours are untrue. There is no clarity on the continental tournament yet. Instead, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will seek clarity from the Indian government on playing Pakistan after the recent standoff following the Pahalgam terrorist attack in April.

India is the official host of Asia Cup 2025. As per the current agreement with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), even if the tournament goes on, Pakistan will play their matches in a neutral venue. However, BCCI is not certain about facing Pakistan in men’s cricket.

“Honestly, we don’t know yet. Women’s cricket is different as there are not a lot of eyeballs on the India-Pakistan match. But in men’s cricket, more than a billion people would tune in. Since the Operation Sindoor, there has been a negative view of an India-Pakistan match. We will seek more clarity from the government on the matter,” a BCCI official told InsideSport.

What’s in store for Asia Cup 2025?

The tournament is scheduled in September in India. Pakistan is set to play their matches either in Colombo or in Dubai. But the BCCI is yet to hold talks with either Sri Lanka Cricket or Emirates Cricket Board on the prospect of hosting Pakistan’s matches, including the big-ticket IND vs PAK match.

In October, India will take on Pakistan in Colombo on October 5 in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup. Since it’s an ICC event, India cannot avoid facing Pakistan if the BCCI does not forfeit the match and concede points.

The Asia Cup, however, is more about the India-Pakistan matches. The broadcaster is guaranteed at least one IND vs PAK match to generate revenue from the deal with the Asian Cricket Council. PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi is also the current president of the ACC. IPL chairman Arun Dhumal is also a member of the board.

“There is no discussion or even a remote thought about boycotting matches. We play Pakistan in the ICC events and it will go on if our government doesn’t say otherwise. As for Asia Cup, we will know in the coming days,” the BCCI official said.

The India Cricket Team is the defending champions of the Asia Cup. Unlike last time, Asia Cup 2025 will be played in T20 format with the T20 World Cup in February-March in mind. The PCB-headed ACC has already postponed the Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup scheduled for a June 5 start. But after spending $170 million for ACC broadcast rights, Sony could demand compensation if the men’s Asia Cup does not go ahead.
