Wilder left Helenius unconscious and burst into tears in an interview afterwardsIt will be a career-defining moment for the American who is hoping to end his slump with a much-needed victory.
Despite the added pressure, it is a situation that Wilder is no stranger to being caught during in the past.
After a brutal and challenging trilogy defeat to Tyson Fury, it was time to rebuild as he looked to return back into the world title mix.
He came up against regular sparring partner and respected foe Helenius in a return outing in 2022.
It ended a year hiatus from the ring but he was a huge favourite to unleash his dynamite power once again.
And the veteran did exactly that, knocking Helenius out cold in the first round.
It was a booming right hand which left the Finnish heavyweight motionless on his back on the canvas.
Helenius’ didn’t move and the referee quickly waved off the contest and beckoned medics into the ring.
The brutal shot drew concern from the boxing fraternity with the arena falling into a hushed silence.
Medics rushed to his aid and after regaining consciousness, he was rushed to hospital.
Wilder’s delight quickly turned to fear as Helenius was rushed to hospitalGettyWilder looked extremely concerned with the damage his right hand had inflicted.
And in an emotional and sad account post-fight, he broke down and burst into tears.
He referenced Pritchard Colon, who suffered a career-ending brain injury in 2015 as a source of his fears.
While being comforted by his team, he said: “My heart out goes out to him and I hope he’s doing okay and he’ll be able to go back to his family.
“Yeah it’s a great knockout, it’s devastating, but how much is that man gonna suffer?
“And we’ve seen what happened. Look at Colon, Prichard Colon.
Wilder and Helenius were reunited afterwards with his opponent safe“Y’all don’t f***ing understand what we go through man.
And I don’t even know him like that, but I’ll always be an advocate for us.
“This man will never know what it feels like to be somebody’s father and that’s the most precious thing in the world to be somebody’s father.
“But he’ll never be nobody’s father man. This man will never have a natural living again because he got in the ring to support his family.
“Now his family have gotta take care of him for the rest of his life.”
Luckily Helenius suffered any permanent damage and was reunited with his opponent upon release from hospital.
Fears are growing for Herndon if Wilder is able to let his hands go and chase another booming KO in his new comeback.
But should he fail to deliver, it could spell the end to a stellar career in the squared circle.
