Mark Pope is being rewarded for a solid debut season at Kentucky.
According to college basketball insider Jon Rothstein, UK’s trip to the Sweet 16 triggered an automatic extension for Pope with a salary increase of $250,000 for the final year, 2029-30.
While the Wildcats expect to compete for championships, Big Blue Nation was pleased with Pope’s first season in Lexington.
Pope guided Kentucky to a 24-12 record and 10-8 record in SEC play. Conference competition opened with a 106-100 home win over future national champion Florida, 1 of 4 losses on the year for the Gators.
Most importantly for Pope, UK ended its Sweet 16 drought. The Cats played in the second weekend for the first time since 2019.
Of course, due to COVID-19, there was no NCAA Tournament in 2020, the year of Kentucky’s last regular-season SEC title. Then UK missed the Big Dance in 2021 before 3 consecutive opening-weekend exits in John Calipari’s final seasons.
With Pope settling in, Kentucky will set its sights on ending its Elite 8 and Final Four droughts.
