Rising star Moses Itauma is confident of beating Oleksandr Usyk, but is craving more professional rounds first.
Itauma has faced comparisons to heavyweight icon Mike Tyson, having blasted through his 11 opening professional bouts in sensational fashion.
Itauma and Usyk have been linked to a fight by Saudi boxing chief Turki AlalshikhThe Briton looked on course to break Tyson’s record of becoming the youngest ever heavyweight world champion, but he is now aged 20 and is unable to smash the feat.
It promises to be a huge year for Itauma, who is now well ranked at heavyweight with the WBO and is pushing for a future world title shot.
Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh incredibly named current unified champion Usyk as a dream opponent for Itauma moving forwards.
It is likely too early given Usyk is fighting for world honours, while the Chatham native is looking to move through the ranks.
And when asked about the fight on the latest episode of talkBOXING, Itauma conceded he needs time before pursuing the clash.
“I feel like with a fight against Usyk, I have a better skillset than him,” Itauma said.
“But I just feel like towards the later rounds, he would outdo me because I’ve never been in that sort of fight.
“So this year is about getting me some rounds, that is a big thing for us.
“I believe my skillset with my ring IQ and what I display in the ring, I think I’m the best in the world.
“But I need to test myself then, and I need to get opponents where I can get to the later rounds.”
GettyBut Itauma believes he has a way to go before facing Usyk[/caption]It is a honest assessment from Itauma, who is still very early on in his heavyweight career.
But the sky is the limit for the supreme operator, who has explosive power, fast hands and an aura of inviciblity.
In his last outing, Itauma demolished Demsey McKean in one round on the undercard of Usyk’s rematch with Tyson Fury.
So the Ukrainian would have seen exactly what the rising star is capable of.
And he has already backed the young talent to succeed him as the champion of the next generation.
Itauma has sparred the likes of Anthony Joshua and Fury from a young age and is becoming more than equipped to take on the best.
Itauma has made a hugely bright start to life in the sportGettyBut he believes right now that isn’t a reality until he makes it to world level.
He continued: “I don’t feel two ways about being linked with these names. It isn’t reality.
“People can say ‘you are going to be fighting that person’ but it isn’t real.
“Daniel Dubois vs Joseph Parker showed that until you were in that ring, it is all just dust.”
