Little did Rohit Sharma know that he would be leading Mumbai Indians as one of the most successful IPL franchise in 2011. On this day 14 years ago, the Hitman donned the blue and gold jersey for the first time. And the rest, like people say, is history. Over the next 9 years, he led MI to 5 IPL titles, making them the first team in the tournament to achieve that feat.

Throwback to when Rohit made his MI debut

Rohit, who was back then an upcoming star, made his move to MI after spending his first three IPL seasons with Deccan Chargers. He was a part of the DC side that lifted the IPL trophy in 2009. In the IPL auction in 2011, MI signed Rohit for Rs 9.2 crore. Thereafter, there was no looking back for the Hitman.

Rohit led MI in 158 matches out of which he tasted victory 87 times. He is the franchise’s most-successful skipper in the tournament’s history. He led the team to IPL title victories in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020.

However, things took a turn just before IPL 2024. Despite being India’s all-format captain, MI decided to replace Rohit with Hardik Pandya as the captain, sparking a huge debate.

In that season, MI suffered 10 losses from 14 games. Pandya & co. finished at the bottom of the points table. To make matters worse, MI fans did not take the move to replace Rohit well. Hardik was greeted by boos in venues across India, including MI’s home ground – the Wankhede stadium.

Cut to IPL 2025, Rohit has delivered a sub-par performance so far. He has registered scores of 0, 8, 13 and 17 so far. While he has been used as an impact player, Sharma has hardly created any impact for MI so far.

However, one can’t just write away Rohit Sharma. After all, with 6666 runs to his name along with 2 centuries and 43 fifties, he is one of the best batters in the IPL. Although he isn’t captain any more, his goal hasn’t changed. In fact, Rohit has revealed that his focus is very much on adding another trophy to MI’s cabinet.
