Authorities Wednesday publicly identified the San Diego Police Department officers involved in a fatal shooting following a roadside confrontation near Grant Hill.

The suspect who died has been identified as 20-year-old Kevin Garcia Gonzalez, a San Diego resident, according to the county sheriff’s department, which investigates the use of lethal force by SDPD personnel.

At around 10:10 a.m. on April 4, a citizen reported seeing Gonzalez brandishing a black revolver next to the historic Bethel AME Church at 31st Street and K Street. San Diego Police responded to the scene, locating Gonzalez in a blue Ford Fusion.

Officers conducted a high-risk vehicle stop, safely removing his female companion but encountering resistance when attempting to engage Gonzalez. After about 40 minutes of negotiation, Gonzalez allegedly pointed a weapon at officers, prompting six officers to open fire.

The officers who discharged their weapons have been identified as Michael Hagen, Diego Arellanes, Ruben Berton, Fernando Fernandez, Acting Sergeant Zane Sisneros and Sergeant Edward Laurendeau, authorities said.

Gonzalez was taken to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries.

The weapon he had was found to be a B.B. gun resembling a revolver, according to sheriff’s officials.

Anyone with information is asked to call the San Diego County Sheriff’s Homicide Unit at (858) 285-6330/after hours at (858) 868-3200 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
