San Diego police released footage Wednesday of an armed suspect who was shot by officers after threatening workers in Miramar Ranch North with a semi-automatic handgun.
The incident occurred at noon March 25 after reports of a man aiming a gun at construction workers and an employee of a pest control company.
The video, mostly made up of footage from a San Diego County Sheriff’s helicopter, along with clips from body-worn cameras, was posted to YouTube. It shows Eric Kulakow standing barefoot on the 11600 block of Angelique Street in a driveway wearing headphones or earmuffs. He occasionally points a weapon at the pest control truck, where the worker had taken cover.
Although Kulakow, 59, waved the gun in the air and mimicked motions of firing, no gunshots were reported, authorities said.
He stood in the driveway for approximately 45 minutes, ignoring commands given by the helicopter crew to drop the weapon, which he held in his right hand, or shifted to clutch with both hands.
During this time, the pest control worker climbed into the back of his work truck window, while officers, SWAT team members and negotiators assembled at the scene.
Upon arrival, a police team was stationed on the corner of Angelique and Cypress Canyon Park Drive to evacuate the pest control worker.
Two SWAT sniper teams also were positioned to the north and south of Little Silver Court, one in a field and another on a nearby balcony.
At 1:05 p.m., Kulakow walked a short distance to the west, approaching the corner of the street, where he allegedly pointed his handgun at the rescue team, prompting SWAT officers Brandon Jordan and Chris Lingenhol to to fire their rifles.
Kulakow collapsed to the ground after being struck with a single round and died at the scene. Authorities were able to recover his weapon and help the pest control worker to safety.
The motive behind Kulakow’s behavior remains unclear, police said. No officers or civilians were injured during the incident.
