Dame Helen Mirren has given us many looks during her six-decade acting career. She looked every bit the part of prim, proper and powerful as the Queen of England when she took on the titular role of Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen, a performance that nabbed her a Golden Globe and Oscar. Her newest role brings her to the small screen. Mirren plays family matriarch Maeve Harrigan in Paramount+'s MobLand, which dropped in March. Her typical look—perhaps predictably—involves wearing a ton of black.Off-screen, the 79-year-old's style has also made royal statements—notably, that women 50+ can play with fashion and look absolutely fabulous while they're at it."Helen Mirren epitomizes ageless elegance," raves Kim Appelt, celebrity stylist and author of Style for Everybody. "Her ability to blend classic silhouettes with contemporary trends showcases her confidence and understanding of personal style. She embraces bold colors and intricate details and always carries herself with grace, making her a true fashion icon for women over 50."In fact, Appelt shares that her favorite fashion looks from Mirren have all occurred over the last decade. She shares her seven picks for Dame Helen Mirren's best looks ever and how to get them at home while remaining true to what makes you uniquely you.Related: 7 Best Mature Fashion Influencers You Have To Follow on YouTube
Helen Mirren's 7 Best Fashion Looks, According to a Celebrity Stylist
1. Well, yellow there
Mirren looked sunny and (almost)-75 when she wore a yellow Dolce & Gabbana silk chiffon gown to the screening of Annette at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival shortly before her 75th birthday. "The bold yellow hue illuminates her complexion, while the fitted bodice and flowing skirt create a flattering silhouette," Appelt explains. If yellow doesn't suit you, that's fine. Appelt says color isn't what she wants people to take away from this vibrant look. Instead, she suggests women opt for a gown color that leaves you radiating from the inside out and a defined waist, which accentuates your figure.Related:'Better Than Ever Beauty Awards:' The 50 Best Products for Women 50+, According to Parade Editors & Experts
2. Crown jewel
Mirren wore this teal, lace and floral Dolce & Gabbana frock for the second time in two days (and third time overall) at Prince's Trust Celebrate Success Awards at Odeon Leicester Square. Two days prior, the actress wore it with a fitted cardigan and drop earrings to the Empire Awards on Sunday. She rinsed, washed and somewhat repeated the look, nixing the cardigan and adding strands of pearls to the Prince Trust event. Any way you style it, Appelt is a fan."The lace detailing adds a touch of femininity, and the teal color is both vibrant and sophisticated," Appelt gushes. She says women 50+ can replicate the look by incorporating lace elements "for a delicate, elegant touch."Appelt also says that wearing jewel tones adds figurative richness to an ensemble. As for double-dipping? Go ahead. It's budget-friendly, practical and no longer a fashion faux pas to wear something twice (and never should have been considered one).
3. Precious purple
Mirren graced the red carpet in a royal purple Elie Saab Haute Couture gown with a train that truly brought the drama to a screening of La Plus Precieuse Des Marchandises (The Most Precious Of Cargoes) at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. However, it's the neckline that popped for Appelt. "The off-the-shoulder neckline highlights her décolletage, and the purple color exudes confidence, royalty and pure class," she raves. You can recreate this look with any length dress and even blouses."Experiment with off-the-shoulder styles to showcase elegance," Appelt recommends. "Embrace bold colors like purple to make a statement."
4. Fairytale come to life
Mirren showed you can sport a light dress and gray hair when she took to the Closing ceremony of the 57th Monte Carlo TV Festival in June of 2017. Appelt says the hue of the dress "complements her hair and skin tone beautifully—classy, beautiful and visually stunning."The takeaway? Reaching for tones that harmonize with your natural coloring is a total "do." Adding other elements, like sequins or sheer, layer on impact.Related:7 Best Cocktail Dresses for Women Over 50, According to a Celebrity Stylist
5. Black is still the new black
Slipping into a black frock remains a timeless way to stun with a classic look. Mirren showed us how it's done when she stunned in a black dress and sheer, polka-dotted overlay at the London premiere of The Good Liar in 2019."The monochromatic palette is timeless, and the tailored fit showcases her figure," Appelt says. "I love the sheer and the black floral accent—just the right touch of classy."In short, black dresses remain pieces worthy of real estate in a capsule wardrobe."Invest in well-tailored black dresses," Appelt says.Black may feel basic, but Appelt says playing with texture can prevent a monochrome outfit from appearing boring.
6. Shine bright
The pink gown Mirren wore to the Fast X at the Colosseum in Rome in 2023 got a glamorous punch-up courtesy of gold embellishments. Appelt says the pattern is youthful. The floor-grazing length and a pulled-back bun helped Mirren look "fresh." Appelt suggests freshening up your look with embellishments and patterns in sophisticated color palettes (floral would also work here, she says).Appelt also recommends opting for arm coverage and dresses with some volume at the bottom for a balance of elegance and comfort.
