Gavin Gallaher and Tyson Bass accounted for all four of the UNC long balls, as each player homered twice. Gallaher’s first blast of the night put the cherry on top of a four-run sixth inning for Carolina, as his three-run home run gave the Diamond Heels a 5-2 lead.

But the game flipped in Elon’s favor in a disastrous bottom of the sixth for UNC pitching. Ryan Lynch, pitching his fourth inning of the night, allowed a single and then hit a batter before allowing an RBI double to draw Elon within 5-3. A pitching change did nothing to stop the bleeding, as Cale Bolton promptly walked the only batter he faced on four pitches to load the bases. Camron Seagraves, the hero of UNC’s win against Duke Saturday, then issued yet another walk to drive in another Elon run. A Jackson Van De Brake throwing error on the potential third out of the inning gave Elon another run, and two more hits drove in three more. By the time the inning was over, the Phoenix had scored seven runs to take a 9-5 lead.

Fortunately for UNC, its bats were far from finished. After a walk and a single, Luke Stevenson stepped to the plate with two outs. Elon elected to walk the Carolina catcher, bringing Tyson Bass up as the potential tying run. Bass punished the Phoenix for the gamble, hitting a game-tying grand slam over the wall in left field.

Hunter Stokely then reached on an Elon error, bring up Gallaher again. The sophomore third baseman proceeded to smoke a breaking ball for his second homer of the night to give the Diamond Heels the lead back at 11-9.

Elon got a run closer with a home run in the bottom of the eighth, but Bass got the run back for UNC with a lead-off homer in the top of the ninth, restoring the two-run advantage at 12-10. Tom Chmielewski retired the Phoenix in order in the bottom of the inning to secure the high-scoring win.

UNC used seven pitchers in total. Folger Boaz, despite facing three batters and only recording one out, was credited with the win. Chmielewski earned his first save of the season, and he was the only UNC pitcher to not allow a baserunner.

The Diamond Heels are now 25-8 on the season and 6-3 in true road environments. UNC will be back in action when it hosts Wake Forest for a three-game series at Boshamer Stadium beginning Thursday evening. First pitch in the series opener is scheduled for 7 p.m.
