MORGANTON, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — There are tire marks left in the grass showing where a car ran off Conley Road, south of Morganton, hitting three children who were working at their lemonade stand early Tuesday afternoon.
"I went back to get some water... And I was right there, and it just happened so fast," said Elizabeth.
She was only seconds away from being hit by a car like her younger sister. The next thing she knew, her sister and their friends were hit.
North Carolina Highway Patrol says two cars were involved in a collision around 1:20 p.m.
"I was scared, I didn't know what to do... I just ran and got my mom," she said.
"Very distraught, and just said momma, you need to hurry and get here Annabelle has been run over," her mother said.
The young girls, ages 7, 8 and 9, were taken to the hospital in critical condition. Two of the children were airlifted and EMS transported another.
QCN Reporter Shaquira Speaks caught up with the families of the young girls returning home from the hospital to pack a bag while the girls were in surgery.
"Just as soon as I got to park, I come over here and see how bad it was actually then... Is just very traumatized to see something like that. Especially the child... Yeah... Seeing pieces everywhere," said the father of one of the girls.
The family says it's a miracle the accident wasn't worse. Now they're asking drivers everywhere to be more vigilant.
"Be more careful, the more mindful that there's kids out of school for the summer and the little things like this and just try to pay more attention and I can't blame anyone for the accident. Accidents happen. But I was upset about it. I've just had to pray about it," said the mother of one of the young girls.
State troopers say the driver was charged with failure to yield causing serious bodily injury.
