EMERYVILLE, Calif. (KRON) -- An individual whale considered rare for the San Francisco Bay has been observed repeatedly stranding itself near the East Bay this month. On Tuesday, the minke whale once again stuck itself in mud at low tide in the same area, according to The Marine Mammal Center.

Concern is growing among scientists over the juvenile minke whale that has stranded itself in shallow water off of Emeryville at least three times over the past week. Experts said that the reasoning behind the multiple strandings of the same individual is unclear.

During the first observed stranding on April 2, responding experts noted that the whale had suffered some extent of sunburn from being out of the water for a “lengthy period of time,” TMMC’s Giancarlo Rulli told KRON4. The young minke was able to swim away on its own that day during high tide.

On Monday, the same whale was reported to be stuck about 40 feet off shore in the same area near Emeryville, Rulli said. Once again, it swam away on its own power as the high tide came in.

On Tuesday, the minke whale became stuck in the mud during the low tide in the same area. Experts are closely monitoring the situation from shore, according to Rulli. Firefighters began spraying water over the whale in the afternoon.

Even as the condition of the whale appears to be normal, Rulli told KRON4, it is concerning to scientists as it has remained in the area over an extended period of time and continues to strand itself.

Minke whales are rare in the San Francisco Bay. They have only been sighted five times, this individual included, since 2009.
