Neil Robertson’s reaction said it all.
The Australian star came up against world No. 15 Stephen Maguire in the first round of the 2020 Masters at the Alexandra Palace.
EurosportMaguire’s attempt to pocket a red ended in one of the most bizarre shots of all time[/caption]Robertson, seeded third at the tournament, enjoyed a blistering start over the Scot as he raced out to a 5-1 lead in the first-to-six contest.
On the brink of a first round elimination, Maguire knew he had to pull a rabbit out of the hat if he was to mount a spectacular comeback.
He did more than just that.
Maguire looked to pot a red into the corner pocket and simultaneously send the cue ball into a pack of reds to break it up.
The Scot managed to pocket the red, but not before one of the most baffling sequences of events ever seen on the baize.
Maguire hit the cue ball into the red with such ferocity it rebounded out of the pocket and into the air while the cue ball flew over the pack of reds.
Remarkably, the red in question had a remarkable amount of backspin on it and it trickled towards the pocket it was intended for.
The shot sent snooker fans inside the Ally Pally wild as they marvelled at Maguire’s brilliance.
However, those cheers soon turned to gasps of horror as the cue ball nicked the edge of the middle pocket and rolled into the corner pocket.
As a result, it meant Maguire’s moment of magic was in vain.
EurosportThe Australian could not believe Maguire managed to pull off the shot he did[/caption] EurosportEven the referee was left in stitches at what had transpired[/caption]Robertson simply sat in his chair with his mouth agape as he could scarcely believe what he’d just witnessed.
As for Maguire, he could only smile through the pain.
One Eurosport commentator said: “Incredible. Well, you’ll never see anything like that again.”
Another commentator added: “I don’t think Stephen Maguire did see it disappear. He was celebrating the fluke.”
Although he committed a foul, it seemed the stunning shot kicked Maguire into gear.
The Scot rattled off the next five to complete a thrilling 6-5 comeback over Robertson to book a spot in the second round against David Gilbert.
