Kalen DeBoer updates spring plans for Ryan Williams, multiple tight ends battling injuries ...0

Alabama got more than 100 snaps in between its first and second teams during Friday’s scrimmage. Rising sophomore receiver Ryan Williams didn’t see 1 of them. Afterward, head coach Kalen DeBoer told reporters that Williams is dealing with a few “nicks” that will limit his involvement in spring ball for the duration of the session.

“Just taking care of him. We know what we have there,” DeBoer said. “He might not do much the rest of the spring. … Just being really careful with some things he’s going through the last week or so.”

Williams burst onto the scene as a freshman last fall, recording 865 yards and 8 touchdowns on 48 catches. His first 2 collegiate catches, both of them in the season opener, went for touchdowns. He exploded for 177 yards and a score against Georgia in front of a national TV audience. As one of the most explosive receivers in the sport, Williams is a critical piece of the Alabama offense heading into the new year.

But he’s also not the only pass-catcher dealing with some injury concerns in the spring. Josh Cuevas is also out for the rest of the spring period with an undisclosed injury, DeBoer announced on Friday.

“He’ll be good for the fall but he’ll be done for the rest of the spring,” DeBoer said.

Marshall Pritchett is in the same situation, DeBoer went on to say. Given the injury management plans for both, the tight end position for Alabama is “kind of lean” at the present moment, DeBoer said. However, there doesn’t seem to be much concern that those issues will bleed into fall camp.

Cuevas had 16 catches for 218 yards and a score last year. He entered the spring looking like the top option in a room that has had a fair bit of turnover this offseason.

Robbie Ouzts and C.J. Dippre, Alabama’s top options at the position last season, are preparing for the NFL Draft. The Tide are also without Danny Lewis Jr. due to injury, and incoming freshman Kalen Edwards doesn’t arrive until the summer. Jay Lindsey is the top healthy option, and DeBoer said Alabama had to get creative on Friday with players in new spots to practice the looks they wanted during the scrimmage.

The Crimson Tide wrap up their spring period next Saturday with the annual A-Day Game at 1 p.m. ET.
