It was for Rudd and Scott’s Adult Swim series The Greatest Event in Television History back in 2014 when the pair set out to recreate the opening sequence of the 1980s sitcom that starred Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari.
As Rudd told Jimmy Fallon, the show used a version of Joel’s late ‘70s hit “My Life” as its theme that had a different singer--Gary Bennett with Mike Lucas on piano--but they wanted to get the Piano Man for their remake.
"Both Adam and I are fanatics…. We were very nervous. He said, 'I'll give you an hour.' We went to the Hamptons, and there was a piano in a room. We had no plan. We didn't know what we were going to do," Rudd explained.
“So we went to an Italian restaurant,” Rudd added, prompting Fallon to respond, “Wait. An Italian restaurant with Billy Joel?!" obviously aware that Joel has another famous tune called “Scenes From an Italian Restaurant.”
"It was one of the greatest nights of our lives," said Rudd, who added that "My Life" was his favorite song when he was growing up.
“That is my dream!!! Goto an Italian dinner with Billy Joel - how epic!” wrote one.
