Mayor Walt Maddox proclaimed April 2025 as “Fair Housing Month” at the Tuscaloosa City Council meeting on Tuesday.
This April marks the 57th anniversary of the passage of the Fair Housing Act in 1968, with the month being dedicated to raising awareness about fair housing principles and equal opportunities.
“The City of Tuscaloosa firmly supports programs that will educate the public on housing opportunities and participate in efforts with other organizations to assure people understand their rights related to housing,” Maddox said.
Maddox also brought attention to the runoff election in District 1, encouraging voters to engage. He noted that only 11% of registered voters cast their ballot in the March 4 election, while 17% voted in the September 2024 school board referendum for increasing property tax and an estimated 42% voted in the presidential election.
“Montgomery and D.C. get the attention, but I’ll tell you, what happens in this chamber, what happens at the county commission and what happens at the school board will impact your life much more,” Maddox said.
Following Maddox’s statement, Raevan Howard, a city council member for District 2, announced that the West Alabama Multicultural Alliance, Tuscaloosa Civil Rights History & Reconciliation Foundation and Tuscaloosa Sister Cities will be hosting the eighth annual WAMA Fest, a festival celebrating the diverse cultural heritage of West Alabama, at the Tuscaloosa River Market from 2 to 4 p.m. on April 6.
Lee Busby, a member for District 4, announced the fourth annual Tuscaloosa Gauntlet, a military-style obstacle course race hosted by Tuscaloosa County Parks & Recreation Authority, Visit Tuscaloosa and the Alabama Marines Foundation at Sokol Park on April 5 to raise funds for the AMF.
Additionally, Matthew Wilson, a member for District 1, announced the groundbreaking of New Hoops 4 New Heights, a project by Leadership Tuscaloosa to implement a community basketball court and pavilion at the New Heights Community Resource Center.
Following the announcements, the council appointed Howard as the voting delegate to represent the City of Tuscaloosa at the Annual Convention for the Alabama League of Municipalities on May 15, with Councilors Cassius Lanier and John Faile as alternate voting delegates.
