North Carolina wants ex-federal employees who are now out of work to apply for state government.
A new jobs portal, launched by Gov. Josh Stein on Friday, is aimed at those hit by “recent federal cuts” as the Trump administration and Elon Musk’s DOGE team eliminate swaths of federal employees.
“Public servants help make our state everything that it is, and there are many talented people looking for work right now,” Stein said in a news release. “The State of North Carolina is proud to welcome smart and dedicated public-spirited people to join our team.”
The site — nc.gov/joinNC — is also directed to those who lost their jobs in the wake of Hurricane Helene. It offers to connect applicants with a recruiter, browse available jobs, explore unemployment benefits and answers frequently asked questions.
“If you have recently been displaced from your career of service, North Carolina encourages you to apply,” said Staci Meyer, the state’s HR director.
North Carolina joins a host of states ramping up their recruiting efforts to land ex-federal workers. In neighboring Virginia, Gov. Glenn Youngkin launched a “Virginia Has Jobs” program. And Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro signed an executive order making federal work experience equivalent to Pennsylvania experience.
Still, the state faces challenges of its own in filling out the workforce. About 20% of roles sit unfilled, Meyer told lawmakers last week, and it takes months to fill a job. The state has more than 1,000 job postings active online, and thousands of total vacancies.
