An improbable trek by Woodbridge’s boys golf team to a CIF-SS title and berth in the SCGA qualifying tournament became emotional Tuesday as the squad remembered a fallen teammate.
After the Warriors captured the Division 4 title at Los Serranos Golf Club, the team and coach Andrew Parker honored Woodbridge player Jeremiah Kim, who died last year.
In March 2024, Kim suffered sudden cardiac arrest while playing a golf tournament in Temecula, his mother Joanna Kim confirmed. Kim’s father was on the course with him and performed CPR but Kim died 11 days later at age 16, Joanna Kim said.
Kim, who was a junior, left a lasting legacy with the Woodbridge program. Some players, for example, wear a special hat that pays tribute to Kim.
“Jeremiah was with us out there (Tuesday),” Parker said. “Last season, our team suffered a profound loss wit the passing of a beloved teammate, Jeremiah Kim. The emotional weight of a losing a brother just floored our team. Yet, through the grief process, these young men found strength in one another.”
“They rallied around their shared love of the game, a commitment to excellence and their desire to play for one another. I couldn’t be prouder of what this team has accomplished.”
Ranked 11th among the Division 4 playoff teams, Woodbridge recorded a score of 373 to beat runner-up Crean Lutheran by four strokes for the championship.
Sophomore Eli Allgood carded eight birdies en route a 7-under-par 65 to lead the Warriors. Allgood posted the lowest score in the division.
Woodbridge formed a tight scoring group behind Allgood with junior Joseph Firestone (75), freshman Alex Li (77), junior Charles Godinez (77) and junior Logan Li (79).
Woodbridge’s average player score was 74.6 or about about 2.5-over-par.
The Warriors advanced to Thursday’s qualifying tournament with the top teams in Division 1 and Division 2 champion Oaks Christian.
The county’s qualifiers from Division 1 behind champion Loyola were runner-up Santa Margarita, No. 5 Anaheim Discovery Christian, No. 7 Sage Hill, No. 9 Huntington Beach and No. 10 Sunny Hills.
The qualifier is Thursday at Temecula Creek Country Club. The top-four team advance to the e CIF/SCGA Southern California Regional.
In other results, Fairmont Prep won the Division 5 title with a score of 399 at Sterling Hills Golf Club.
