The Trump administration has made public thousands of pages of documents related to the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the 35th and first Irish Catholic president of the United States, who was killed in Dallas, Texas, in November 1963.
In the almost 62 years since the assassination of JFK, the event continues to fuel conspiracy theories. with an astonishing 65 percent of Americans believing his killing was part of a conspiracy and that Lee Harvey Oswald was not the lone gunman.
Over the years everyone from Fidel Castro to George H.W. Bush have been implicated in conspiracies related to JFK's killing, but what might be less known is that numerous conspiracies linking Israel to his murder exist and have done so since the very year that it occurred.
In 1963, the idea that Kennedy was killed as part of a vague "Zionist plot" spread like wildfire throughout much of the Arab and Muslim world, with it being used by Arab nationalist and anti-Zionist regimes and movements as a means of propaganda against Israel.
In the years following the assassination, the Israeli conspiracy became connected to the country's nuclear weapons programme. Kennedy, the conspiracy theorists claimed, had been keen to halt Israel's rapidly advancing nuclear weapons programme, which had allegedly reached the test phase with the assistance of France in 1960.
Kennedy, according to the conspiracy, feared that Israel acquiring nuclear weapons would lead to a nuclear arms race among its Arab adversaries, increasing the chances of nuclear war. Lyndon B. Johnson, Kennedy's vice president and successor, was allegedly ordered by Israel to have the president killed, as the conspiracy goes.
Is there any evidence for this?
In the documents released by the US's National Security Archive in 2016 relating to JFK, it was revealed that Kennedy wanted to closely monitor Israel's Dimona nuclear facility and pressured the government of then Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion to prevent Israel from gaining nuclear weapons.
Kennedy, more than any other president since 1945, was a major and sincere advocate of non-proliferation - this included Israel.
However, not a single shred of evidence has emerged in any of the documents relating to JFK - including the ones released by Trump this week - linking Israel to playing any part in his murder.
The conspiracy theory became a favourite of antisemites in the US and Europe, but in 2004, the conspiracy remerged in the mainstream when it was endorsed by Mordechai Vanunu, the Israeli who revealed the extent of Israel's nuclear weapons programme to the world in 1986.
Despite Vanunu's support for the idea that Israel had Kennedy killed over his opposition to their nukes, the Israeli has provided no convincing evidence, and none has ever emerged, to back his assertion up. Given he was locked up for 18 years for his noble whistleblowing endeavours, it could be that Vanunu's motive is more anger at the Israeli state than genuine conviction.
In 2009, the late Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi said in a speech to the UN General Assembly that Kennedy was killed due to his suspicions over Dimona and the pressure he applied on Ben-Gurion. However, it appears that Gaddafi was simply regurgitating earlier versions of the conspiracy theory, without bringing any real evidence to light.
