Newcastle is about to have its biggest party in a very long time. The city with a notoriously loyal fanbase behind their football club finally ended a 70-year wait for a major trophy, with the underdogs defeating Liverpool 2-1 in the 2025 League Cup final at Wembley.

The north-east side hadn’t won a major trophy since their 1955 FA Cup final victory, but that run is finally over. Eddie Howe was the man to lead them to success, becoming the first English manager to win a major trophy with a Premier League club since 2008, when Harry Redknapp guided Portsmouth to unlikely FA Cup glory.Dan Burn was one of their heroes on the day, with the 32-year-old capping off a superb week with a cup-winning goal for the club he’s supported all his life.

Two years ago, Newcastle fans travelled down to Wembley with hopes of ending their long trophy drought, but they were left disappointed following a lacklustre 2-0 defeat to Manchester United in the 2023 final. There was no such dissatisfaction this time around, as Newcastle not only defeated arguably the best English club team right now but beat them up.

Newcastle’s starting XI contained five different players aged 30 or older, with the average age of the side (29 years, 13 days old) the oldest by a side in a League Cup final since Manchester City in 2018.

That experience helped the Magpies control much of the first half against the Premier League leaders. Despite less possession than their opponents, Newcastle got the ball into attacking areas and caused Liverpool problems and were rewarded with Burn’s header on the stroke of half-time.A corner from Kieran Trippier was floated into the box and Burn – who received this first call-up to the England national team three days previous – met the ball with a powerful header running in from the back post, which flew past Caoimhín Kelleher and into the net.

Burn was an unlikely scorer in the final. That goal was his first for Newcastle in over a year since January 2024 versus Fulham, ending a run of 54 competitive appearances for the club without scoring. He was also the first Newcastle player to score a competitive goal at Wembley Stadium since Rob Lee in April 2000.

For Arne Slot’s side, it was an uncharacteristically nervous first half. They failed to offer anything in attack whatsoever until the third minute of added time, when they finally had the first touch in the opposition box seconds before their first effort at goal, via Diogo Jota.

Alexander Isak thought he’d doubled Newcastle’s lead just five minutes into the second half, but the Swede was denied a goal after he was flagged offside.

Isak wouldn’t be denied with his next chance, though. After a good cross from Tino Livramento, Josh Murphy headed down for Isak to smash the ball into the Liverpool net with a half-volley and send the Magpies’ supporters into dreamland behind the goal.

That goal was the perfect way to mark his 100th competitive appearance for the club since joining in August 2022, with his 58th – and most important – goal for them to date.

Isak came close to doubling his goal tally with an acrobatic effort, but a smart save from Kelleher denied Newcastle an even more dominant scoreline.

Liverpool substitute Federico Chiesa halved the deficit in the third minute of added time to make it a very nervous finish for Newcastle, but the Magpies saw out the remainder of the game to cap off a sensational performance where they largely dominated Liverpool from the start to finish.

Five days ago, Liverpool had high hopes of securing a treble this season. Now the possibility of three trophies is down to one, albeit a now extremely likely Premier League title. If Tuesday’s Champions League exit to Paris Saint-Germain was disappointing, this defeat was enraging, such was the lack of any answer to Newcastle’s desire and belief.

With a 12-point lead over Arsenal with just nine Premier League games left to play, Slot’s first season at the club looks as if it’ll end up being a success overall. But a disastrous week will leave many feeling that it could have been so much better.
