Nottingham Forest 1-0 Man City Stats: Callum Hudson-Odoi Puts Forest a Step Closer to Champions League ...Middle East

News by : (The Analyst) -

After an uneventful game was won late on by Callum Hudson-Odoi, check out the best facts and Opta data with our Nottingham Forest vs Man City stats page.

Callum Hudson-Odoi scored the only goal of the game as Nottingham Forest took a huge step towards qualifying for next season’s Champions League by beating Manchester City.

The two sides were separated in the Premier League table by just a single point coming into the game, and it seemed both were more worried about losing than going all out for the win, so cagey was the game for most of the 90 minutes.

The first half was almost a complete non-event. Nico González clipped the outside of the post with a decent effort from 25 yards early on but otherwise, there was next to no action.

Forest did not manage a single shot until the 39th minute – and even that was a speculative Morgan Gibbs-White effort that very nearly went for a throw-in – while neither side managed a shot on target until 42 minutes in when Jérémy Doku had a tame effort easily saved by Mats Sels.

Following a first half in which the hosts showed little ambition, they came out of their shell a little after the break, but moments of real quality eluded them. They came close to a goal when City goalkeeper Ederson produced a brilliant save to tip a Hudson-Odoi strike onto the post, but then, with just seven minutes of normal time to go, the Forest winger struck the winner.

Found by a wonderful switch of play by Gibbs-White, Husdon-Odoi beat Ederson at his near post to down the reigning champions. Following that assist, only Ian Woan (44) has been directly involved in more Premier League goals for Forest than Gibbs-White (39 – 15 goals, 24 assists).

A ninth Premier League defeat of the season for City means manager Pep Guardiola has equalled his worst ever record for losses in a league campaign (level with nine in 2019-20). They have now lost three of their last five matches, and finishing in the top four is by no means guaranteed.

With 10 games remaining, Forest have a four-point cushion to fourth-placed City, and should be starting to believe their Champions League dreams can become a reality.
