This is because the last Monday is set aside for Memorial Day, the time of year we dedicate to honoring those who fought for our country.
According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Memorial Day is the “nation’s foremost annual day to mourn and honor its deceased service men and women.”
Memorial Day dates back to the 1860s, and was originally called “Decoration Day.”
But it will have a big impact on some of the biggest retailers in the US, including Costco.
All of Costco‘s stores usually close on major holidays, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas.
It will leave other big names like Walmart to sweep up the business, giving you somewhere to go when times are at their most trying.
Other major brands that will be open on Memorial Day include chains like Kroger, Trader Joe’s, Target, Whole Foods, Meijer, Publix, and Albertsons.
It is important to know that pharmacy hours could vary by location, so it is important to check.
COSTCO PRAISED
But, some believe that Costco closing on Memorial Day will have little impact.
Kevin Thompson, the CEO of 9i Capital Group and the host of the 9innings podcast, told Newsweek: “Costco closing on Memorial Day will have little impact as shoppers generally make their purchases prior to the closing so they can prepare.
“Costco has been a strong proponent of keeping their integrity, whether it be with the culture of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion as well as supporting holidays the current administration may not support.
“Costco has seen a considerable tick-up in sales after their rebuke of what was deemed an overstep, and customers have supported them with their pocketbooks.”
Drew Powers, the founder of Illinois-based Powers Financial Group, added: “Many companies close on federal holidays, although retail has not always followed suit.
“Memorial Day is a federal holiday, it’s a patriotic holiday, and it’s the unofficial start of the backyard grilling season.
“I am glad Costco has made the move to allow their employees the day off to celebrate and remember those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.”
OTHER SERVICES CLOSED
The US Sun recently reported on major services with both FedEx and UPS that will be frozen on May 26.
For FedEx, the freeze will halt use of FedEx Express and FedEx Freight services for the full 24 hour period.
But the FedEx Office will be running with modified hours.
Stores closed on Memorial Day
Since Memorial Day is a federal holiday, many Americans have the day off work.
While most grocery stores and retailers remain open, there are some exceptions
Costco is closing all stores for the whole day.
So is Natural Grocers, which has 168 stores across 20 states.
Postal services are also affected by the holiday.
All UPS locations will be closed.
FedEx will close many locations, while others will operate with reduced hours.
T.J. Maxx is also operating with different holiday hours that will vary by location.
Aldi will follow suit with “limited hours.”
Sam’s Club has announced that stores will shutter two hours earlier than normal at 6 pm for the upcoming holiday.
Target and Kroger will also have adjusted hours but will remain open.
UPS is doing something similar on the big day, as it will not be running its usual pickup or delivery services.
However, there will be a UPS Express Critical service running on Memorial Day.
UPS recommends calling 1-800-714-8779 to learn more about the service and how you can access it.
