I’ve been a fan of SteelSeries products for years, and as I’ve gotten deeper into mobile gaming, I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect headphones for FPS games. As an avid Call of Duty: Mobile player, I’ve tried all kinds of earbuds and over-ear headsets, but I just haven’t quite found that “sweet spot” for gaming on the go. While the SteelSeries Arctis headsets have been a solid choice, I prefer something more compact, like earbuds, when I’m traveling. That’s why I was really excited to try out the SteelSeries Arctis GameBuds. Like most tech products, these earbuds have their fair share of highs and lows, but they definitely brought something new to my setup.

Setup

Since I typically think of earbuds as ‘mobile first’ I started with using the Arctis Gamebuds with my iPhone. My iPhone 16 Pro Max picked up the Bluetooth connection immediately, and the SteelSeries Arctis Companion app detected them without any issues. I had the same smooth setup experience with my iPad Pro (though it’s worth noting the app isn’t optimized for iPad). The mobile app offers a good variety of audio presets, but if you want to create custom EQ profiles, you’ll need to use the SteelSeries GG Client on macOS or Windows. The same goes for firmware updates — the mobile app covers the basics, but the desktop app is required for full control.

One thing that really stood out as a frustration — aside from needing a desktop app to fully customize my settings — was the connection process. You can’t just connect through the companion app or your device’s Bluetooth menu; you have to do both, which felt a bit clunky. I was also a little let down to find that the Quick-Switch feature only works between the 2.4GHz dongle and Bluetooth, not between two Bluetooth devices.

Another minor annoyance: the app doesn’t stay connected to the earbuds or case when they’re not actively in use. I assume that’s to save battery, but it would have been nice to at least check charging status or battery levels at any time. Instead, you’re left waiting until the earbuds are connected and active to see that info.

The experience was somewhat different when I connected to an Android tablet. I was able to connect directly via Bluetooth without the aid of the app. I didn’t have nearly the same issues with connection as I did with the iPhone. I also found that connecting to the PlayStation 5 was an easy experience. It seems that the iPhone and iPad were the only devices that had a different connection experience.

Comfort

I often struggle with finding earbuds that fit comfortably — many create too much pressure and even trigger headaches. Thankfully, the Arctis GameBuds didn’t cause any of those issues. They were easy to place, felt secure, and stayed comfortable even during long listening sessions. I was pleasantly surprised by how good my ears felt after wearing them for extended periods. Plus, they were easy to remove without any fuss, which is something I really appreciate.

With a solid fit, the GameBuds provided a good amount of passive noise isolation, even before turning on ANC. Once enabled, ANC did reduce some background noise, but it wasn’t nearly as strong or effective as what I’ve experienced with other headsets. I was especially curious about Transparency Mode, but that feature ended up being underwhelming as well — it just didn’t deliver the clarity or environmental awareness I was hoping for.

Sound Quality

Overall, the sound quality was above average. Whether listening to music or playing Call of Duty: Mobile, audio was crisp with decent depth and clarity. However, the voice prompts were noticeably low quality, almost as if they were recorded through an old analog phone. I checked both before and after a firmware update, and unfortunately, there was no improvement. I found out later that these earbuds only support the SBC Bluetooth Codec which provides the lowest quality audio connection as opposed to AAC.

I also ran into some digital interference while using Bluetooth for music playback. Oddly enough, the issue went away once I completely closed the SteelSeries Companion app and let the device handle the audio processing on its own. I found a support article on steelseries.com addressing audio distortion, recommending the ‘Flat’ EQ setting — but I was already using that, and the distortion persisted until I exited the app.

A lot of gaming headsets claim to be “mobile compatible,” but often that just means basic Bluetooth support without full access to features unless you’re connected to a desktop or console. I was really hoping the Arctis GameBuds would be a mobile-first solution, but in practice, they feel more like a scaled-down version of SteelSeries’ over-ear headsets.

While I was happy with the general sound quality (aside from the digital distortion), and I do appreciate the feature set they aimed to provide, the overall execution didn’t quite meet the expectations I have for a mid-to-premium level gaming earbud. There’s a lot of potential here, but I was left wanting more in terms of polish and performance.

Conclusion

The SteelSeries Arctis GameBuds are a compelling attempt to bring premium gaming audio into a portable earbud design. They offer strong sound quality, a comfortable fit, and versatile connectivity options with both Bluetooth and 2.4GHz wireless support. However, despite those strengths, the experience is held back by underwhelming ANC, inconsistent app support, and some frustrating quirks in usability.

For gamers on the go — especially those wanting a familiar SteelSeries sound in a travel-friendly form — these might still be worth considering. But if you’re expecting a seamless, mobile-first solution without compromises, the GameBuds may leave you feeling like they’re just a miniaturized version of SteelSeries’ full-size headsets, rather than something truly optimized for portable play.
