Liverpool held on to earn a vital 2-1 win against Wolves at Anfield, but were made to work very hard by Vitor Pereira’s impressive side.
Goals in the first half from Luis Díaz and Mohamed Salah (penalty) put the Reds in control, but Wolves completely dominated the second half, with Matheus Cunha pulling one back with a quarter of the game remaining.
Arne Slot’s men were clinging on for dear life by the end, but ultimately secured the three points to restore their seven-point advantage over Arsenal in the race for the Premier League title.
Liverpool took the lead in just the 15th minute. Díaz broke down the left and played the ball inside. Salah tried to play the ball back across and a deflection off Toti Gomes presented it to Díaz, who bundled the ball over the line. It was the Colombian’s first goal of 2025, ending a run of 10 games without one.
The hosts doubled their lead in the 37th minute after Díaz was brought down in the box by Wolves goalkeeper José Sá. Salah stepped up to calmly place his penalty high down the middle of the goal, making it 23 for him in the Premier League this season.
Marshall Munetsi came on at half-time for Wolves and almost pulled one back within five minutes of the restart as he was played through on goal but his effort was saved well by Alisson.
Salah had the ball in the net again moments later from a superb run and finish only to be denied by an offside flag. Liverpool were also denied another penalty after a VAR check showed Diogo Jota had initiated the contact with Wolves defender Emmanuel Agbadou in the incident that had initially led to referee Simon Hooper pointing to the spot.
Wolves had another good chance to halve the deficit just after the hour mark when sloppy passing out from the back presented the ball to them, but João Gomes’ shot went well over the bar.
Pereira’s men were dominating, and deservedly pulled one back in the 67th minute when Cunha dragged the ball onto his left foot and bent a shot past Alisson into the far corner from 20 yards. Across the second half, Wolves attempted 10 shots, with Liverpool not recording any after the break.
Nerves were all over the place at Anfield, with Jarell Quansah making a huge clearance at the back post late on, and relieved cheers met the final whistle as, unlike at Everton on Wednesday, Liverpool were able to hold out for the win.
