HOMEGROWN artist Jon Batiste has been handed the task of performing the national anthem at the Super Bowl.
Acclaimed musical artist Batiste, 38, was born and raised in Metairie, Louisiana – in the heart of New Orleans.
ReutersSinger Batiste is a five-time Grammy Award-winning and Academy Award-winning artist[/caption]Seth Dudowsky, head of music at the NFL, said in November: “We’re honored to work with this year’s pregame lineup to celebrate the rich musical legacy of New Orleans and the entire state.”
New Orleans, the home of Mardi Gras, has a rich history with music as well as the Super Bowl.
Batiste will be joined by a host of artists from the area, including Trombone Shorty, Lauren Daigle and Ledisi.
Stephanie Nogueras will accompany Batiste to conduct American Sign Language (ASL) during the anthem.
Batiste has recorded and performed with global artists including Alicia Keys, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Willie Nelson, Lenny Kravitz, ASAP Rocky, Ed Sheeran, Lana Del Rey.
He has also served as the music director of The Atlantic as well as the The Late Show with Stephen Colbert for seven years.
Batiste won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, Grammy and Bafta for the Pixar animated film Soul.
He has won a total of five Grammys from 20 nominations, including Album of the Year in 2021 for We Are.
It will be a record-tying 11 Super Bowls hosted for the city of New Orleans when the action kicks off on Sunday night – same as Miami.
Last year’s pregame show was headlined by country music singer Reba McEntire – who was the fourth country musician in a row to sing The Star-Spangled Banner.
The pregame will be followed by the half-time show, which critically acclaimed artist Kendrick Lamar will headline.
