San Diego County’s Behavioral Health Services department has been awarded more than $29 million in state funding, which will go towards two new facilities offering mental health and substance use treatment services, it was announced Wednesday.
The funding, which comes from a voter-approved bond, will create a Substance Use Residential & Treatment Services — or SURTS — facility in National City and a Children’s Crisis Residential Care facility in Kearny Mesa, the county said.
A $21.1 million award will help create the SURTS facility, which will offer up to 73 new substance use residential treatment beds and 16 recuperative care beds for people who are eligible for Medi-Cal, officials said. Renovations at the National City facility are expected to be completed by late next year.
A $7.9 million award will go towards the children’s care facility, which will be within the county’s Polinsky Children’s Center. It will include 16 new children’s crisis residential beds, and county officials expect construction to be completed sometime in 2027.
Nadia Privara, acting Behavioral Health Services director, said, “This major investment will fill critical care gaps in our system and support the recovery and wellbeing of some of our most vulnerable clients. The Substance Use and Residential Treatment Services facility provides new options for adult clients needing residential treatment and the Children’s Crisis Residential facility will create a much-needed resource for youth in our behavioral health system.”
Along with those awards, the county also announced Behavioral Health Continuum Infrastructure Program grant funds were awarded to five other behavioral health providers in San Diego County:
Palomar Health Foundation received $49.9 million for an acute psychiatric hospital in Escondido; InnerTribal Treatment received $19.9 million for an adult residential SUD treatment facility in Pauma Valley; McAlister Institute for Treatment & Education received $34.5 million for an adult residential SUD treatment facility in San Diego; Casa de Amparo received $19.9 million for a psychiatric residential treatment facility in San Marcos, and; Epidaurus (Amity Vista Ranch) received $31.5 million, for an adult residential SUD treatment facility in Vista.County officials said the seven grants are expected to add 375 treatment beds and 1,538 treatment slots combined to the region.
