ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Police closed the investigation into Theresa Bowick’s missing fence. The city of Rochester removed a fence surrounding the storage units belonging to Conkey Cruisers, a program that loans bikes to neighborhood kids, this past Sunday. News10NBC’s Erin Mahon spoke with Theresa Bowick, the program’s founder, about the situation.
The city said they took down the fence because A-Verdi, the storage company Bowick uses for office space and equipment storage, needs access to their units. Bowick fell behind on lease payments after retiring. A-Verdi said they can no longer lease to Bowick and worked with the city to retrieve their units, which are on city property at Conkey Park.
Bowick said she did not communicate with the city about her lease payments and had instead arranged a payment plan with A-Verdi privately. However, A-Verdi decided not to continue leasing to her this summer and relied on the city to remove the fence.
The city did not notify Bowick about the fence removal and has not specified when the storage units will be taken away.
“You know at this point, unless there’s some sort of Hail Mary that the mayor’s going to throw our way, we’re more than likely going to lose that space in the Conkey Park,” Bowick said. “We will not lash out in hurt or pain. We will continue to work for the mission and vision of Conkey Cruisers to make Rochester one of the healthiest and happiest places on this Earth. That’s what we will do. That’s what I will do as a leader. I’m going to keep fighting for Rochester, even when Rochester’s not fighting for me.”
Bowick expressed feeling blindsided by the city’s lack of communication and is consulting an attorney about her options regarding the fence.
Both the city and A-Verdi acknowledged Bowick’s contributions to the community. The city said they have Bowick’s fence and can deliver it wherever she wants.
