A few Alex Bregman bits to chew on as you settle down for the night …
Jon Heyman tonight writes that although Bregman is receiving “creative short-term offers,” he and Scott Boras are still looking for six+ years. That tracks with Bob Nightengale’s reporting earlier today. Heyman adds that the Astros actually have come up some amount from their offer from earlier in the offseason (reportedly six years and $156 million), which, if true, just has to be the deal Bregman takes. No offense to any of the other suitors (which Heyman identifies as the Cubs, Red Sox, and Tigers). But Ari Alexander reports that, whatever the improved offer is, Bregman is not inclined to take it:The #Astros have improved their initial offer to free agent 3B Alex Bregman, two sources tell KPRC 2.However, that improved offer is unlikely to get the deal done, according to a source. pic.twitter.com/7YP15V8fKy
— Ari Alexander (@AriA1exander) February 7, 2025 I can imagine Bregman getting more on an AAV basis – maybe even $31, $32 million – but not over 6+ years. I just can’t fathom that being a reasonable risk for any team to take. Bregman is still a very good player, but those signs of decline at the plate, heading into his age-31 season, are impossible to ignore. Meanwhile, there’s a chance that the Cardinals are preparing for the loss of Nolan Arenado, who could be dealt to the Red Sox, which would take them out on Bregman. From John Denton, in writing about the Cardinals’ acquisition of infielder Michael Helman:“The Cards and Red Sox have again engaged in trade talks centered around Arenado in recent days, a source told MLB.com. Arenado, who hit .272 with 16 home runs and 71 RBIs in 2024, has a full no-trade clause in his contract, and he exercised that option in December to block a potential trade to the Astros.
Boston would prefer to sign former Astros All-Star Alex Bregman, but it is in a bidding war with at least two other teams for the services of the free-agent third baseman, per the source.”
At least two other teams, not definitely only two other teams. When combined with Heyman excluding the Blue Jays, though, I wonder if they’re out. Had I to guess about what’s going on here: Bregman probably prefers to go back to Houston, all else equal, but the offers just haven’t been enough for him to say yes. Maybe the Tigers have made a bigger offer, but maybe he doesn’t want to go there? And maybe the Cubs are his back-up preference, and are making a compelling offer, but only short-term. And maybe the Red Sox are similarly short-term, but might prefer to go with Arenado anyway if they can get the Cardinals to eat enough salary. To me, this feels like it ends with Bregman taking the best deal he can get from the Astros if it’s still on the table, but a lot can still shake loose. So we keep waiting and watching.
