As Rajasthan Royals celebrate a world record by the youngest player in IPL history, their captain, Sanju Samson, is likely to miss the remaining IPL 2025 campaign. 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi gave RR reasons to cheer and believe as he slammed a 35-ball century, becoming the youngest centurion in the history of T20 cricket. While Samson cheered from the dugout, there is no timeline for his return. He will miss the all-important RR vs MI clash as he recovers.
Samson has been out since RR’s Super Over loss to Delhi Capitals on April 16. Just when he seemed to return to form with a 19-ball 31 against DC, he had to retire hurt with an abdominal injury. He did not return to bat. The injury forced him to miss crucial matches, including those against Lucknow Super Giants, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Gujarat Titans.
Is Samson out of IPL 2025?
Rajasthan Royals’ medical team is closely monitoring Samson’s recovery. RR’s stand-in captain Riyan Parag confirmed that Samson has a side strain.
“Sanju bhaiya is recovering, we’re taking it game by game. He has a side strain. We hope he will be back soon,” Parag said at the toss of RR vs RCB match, hoping that RR captain would return soon.
However, side strain injuries usually take at least four weeks to recover from. In some cases, it could take months. As Samson has been out since April 16, his return is unlikely by the first week of May. With RR’s last league match on May 16, Sanju Samson will likely miss the remaining four matches.
Samson played as an Impact Sub in the first three matches, with Riyan Parag leading the charge of RR. While he played the next four games, Parag took over the leadership from Samson once again. But Rajasthan Royals are now in a do-or-die situation despite their win against GT. A loss will eliminate them from the IPL 2025 playoff race. Hence, Samson, who has scored 224 runs at a strike rate of 143.58 and an average of 37.33, would have played a crucial role in keeping RR’s playoff hopes alive.
