A Filthy Goal, Dach Sits, Slaggert’s Effort, Saad Waived, Heiskanen Hurt, and Other Blackhawks Bullets ...Middle East

Because it was filthy and ridiculous and amazing and all the things that some people needed to see to remind them that Connor Bedard is special, let’s watch this other angle of his goal from last night in Tampa.

While there are still people out there who have to problem slinging their hot takes at Bedard, let’s keep this in mind relative to what the all-time greats in the history of the Blackhawks have done thru 50 games as a teenager. And let’s also keep in mind that he isn’t exactly in the same situation as any of the other Hall of Famers on this list; they all had relatively good/decent/ascending rosters around them (Kane and Toews had Patrick Sharp… this team does not).

Connor Bedard scored one of the @NHLBlackhawks’ two second-period goals to boost his totals to 14-30—44 (50 GP), which surpasses his point total through 50 games in his rookie campaign last year (17-26—43 in 2023-24).#NHLStats: t.co/QjsUh0VVnE pic.twitter.com/8hCtWTH2JJ

— NHL Public Relations (@PR_NHL) January 29, 2025 To the surprise of nobody, the coach’s kid knows puck. Great line here from Landon Slaggert before the game in Tampa last night. Maybe he can get that printed on some shirts and hand them out in the locker room. Oh, and he threw in the game-winning goal in his first NHL game of the season last night while he was at it. Love it.

Landon Slaggert has worked on making offensive plays down low and out of the corners this season. "My dad always has a saying, 'Where do the goals hide?' The answer is they don't: they're around the blue paint. You've just got to get there."He had 13 points in his last 16…

— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) January 28, 2025 So why was Colton Dach a healthy scratch last night? I was hoping it was because the Blackhawks were making him change numbers on the 28th because Larmer reasons, but apparently interim head coach Anders Sorensen needs to see him be more physical. Which is… interesting. He finished tied for the team lead with three hits in a team-low 10:24 on the ice in the Blackhawks’ loss to Minnesota on Sunday night.

Sorensen said Colton Dach “needs to have a little more presence, physicality-wise.” t.co/t1aUfBpiif

— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) January 28, 2025 Steven Ellis at Daily Faceoff took a look at ten NHL prospects who are having big seasons. Right at the top of his list: Blackhawks defense prospect Sam Rinzel at Minnesota. Here’s what he wrote about Rinzel:

Rinzel is legit, Hawks fans. The 6-foot-4 defender has obvious size, but he’s producing at just under a point per game, as well. He’s almost at double-digit goals for the first time while playing all situations for Minnesota. He’s a minute-muncher, playing more than 22 minutes a night in most games (his season high was 30:29 in mid-December). Defensively, he’s smart, and he’s much better with the puck than scouts gave him credit for ahead of the 2022 NHL Draft. Rinzel should have little issue developing into a serviceable NHL defenseman in the near future.

I highlighted 10 NHL prospects thriving in the NCAA this year, including #GoHabsGo's Jacob Fowler and #Blackhawks' Sam Rinzel.For fans of #LGRW, #TimeToHunt, #Smashville, #Isles, #NYR, #STLBlues, #GoBolts and #ALLCAPS: t.co/B5BBrxC9Xk

— Ontario Hockey League (@OHLHockey) January 28, 2025 HELLO! The St. Louis Blues put former Blackhawks forward Brandon Saad on waivers on Tuesday. He will clear waivers — or be claimed by a team — this afternoon. To be absolutely crystal clear: no, the Blackhawks should not put a claim on Saad.

STL GM Doug Armstrong says Brandon Saad is going on waivers today. He has one more year at a $4.5M AAV, with actual cash of $3.63M

— Elliotte Friedman (@FriedgeHNIC) January 28, 2025 This did not look good last night. Mark Stone said after the game he was tripped, which is why he went into Miro Heiskanen’s knee head-first. Dallas head coach Pete DeBoer didn’t have an update immediately after the game but, if the Stars are going to be without Heiskanen — who averages over 25 minutes per game and is one of the best all-around defensemen in the game — for any amount of time whatsoever that’s enormous. Keep in mind that many in the league perceive Colorado’s trade of Mikko Rantanen as a step back by the Avs. With that, the Canucks being a dumpster fire and Minnesota now shutting down Kirill Kaprizov for at least four weeks, the Western Conference has plenty of turmoil right now.

Yesterday was the 50th anniversary of the Bears drafting Walter Payton, which means we all should watch Sweetness highlights every day for a week. Bryan Smith gave us his new prospect rankings for the Cubs. The NBA released the initial rosters for the Rising Stars game at All-Star Weekend and the Bulls’ exciting rookie (aka The Hinsdale Hammer) got snubbed. Not cool.
