DENVER (KDVR) — Two people were killed in an early morning shooting in the Clayton neighborhood, and one suspect is still on the run.
Denver police chief Ron Thomas posted a video update on X explaining the situation. He said that at around midnight on Monday, two groups of adults arrived at a 7-Eleven at 35th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard. The area is next to the Park Hill Golf Course.
Thomas said the two groups were involved in a verbal altercation that escalated into gunshots. The chief said one victim was pronounced dead in the parking lot and a second victim was taken to a local hospital where they were pronounced dead.
Governor, lawmakers ‘welcome’ DEA raid with 41 detained by ICE in Adams CountyThomas said an officer in the area heard the gunshots and responded to the 7-Eleven. The officer noticed a suspect with an alleged gun in his hand and fired shots. The officer then chased the suspect who managed to escape.
Thomas said it is unclear if the suspect was injured in the shooting and it is unclear if the suspect fired at the officer. The officer was not injured in the shooting.
Thomas said they have one suspect in custody, but officers are still searching for the person who fled from the officer.
Thomas described the at-large suspect as:
Hispanic male 18-26 years old 5 feet, 6 inches to 6 feet tall Last seen wearing a black hoodie and red pajama/sweat pantsThomas addressed the community's safety and said the incident appeared to be isolated.
"Certainly it's a concern when you have an individual who is armed with a weapon who obviously doesn't have any concern about shooting another individual in our community and also engaging with police officers in gunfire. But, we do believe that this incident is isolated between these two groups that became engaged at this altercation at the 7-Eleven," said Thomas. "So, I think that the threat to the community is limited but certainly, we want to make sure the people are aware of the fact that there is a suspect who's fired a gun, killed at least one or two people, in addition to shooting at the officer."
The investigation is ongoing, anyone with information is asked to contact the Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867. Tipsters can remain anonymous.
