Syria arrests two leaders from al-Quds Brigades ...Syria

News by : (ُEnabbaladi) -

Syrian security forces arrested two leaders from al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad Movement, for unknown reasons.

A statement from the Palestinian group published today, April 22, indicates that Syrian security arrested Khaled Khaled, in charge of the Syrian arena in the Islamic Jihad, and Yasser al-Zafari, the head of the executive committee in Syria.

The movement pointed out in its statement that the leaders have been detained for unknown reasons for five days.

Al-Quds Brigades called on the Syrian government to release the two leaders, asserting that “their weapons in Syria have not been directed at anything other than the Palestinian borders,” according to the brigade’s statement.

Enab Baladi contacted the movement’s representative in Syria to get more details about the incident, but received no response by the time the news was released.

For its part, the Syrian government has not officially commented on the arrests.

However, Reuters confirmed the incident, citing an unnamed official in the Syrian Ministry of Interior.

The agency pointed out that the source did not respond to questions regarding the reasons for their arrest.

The Islamic Jihad Movement is one of the Palestinian organizations that have bases in Syria and Lebanon, and it remained active even after the fall of the Assad regime.

The bases of the Islamic Jihad in Syria have been subjected to numerous strikes by Israeli aircraft, resulting in the deaths of several leaders from the movement.

After the fall of the regime, Israel targeted a building belonging to the Palestinian movement in the Terraces neighborhood of the Mashrou Dummar area in the capital, Damascus, on March 13.

Ismail al-Sindawi, the head of national relations for the Islamic Jihad Movement in Syria, told Enab Baladi at the time that the attack targeted an empty building belonging to the movement, which belonged to its Secretary-General, Ziad al-Nakhala.

The Israeli army commented on the strike, stating that it “will not allow terrorist organizations to position themselves within Syria and operate against the State of Israel, and will act forcefully against any such attempt.”

It added that Israel will continue to target “Palestinian terrorist organizations wherever necessary and will continue to work to protect the citizens of Israel.”

One of Washington’s conditions

Washington has offered the new Syrian administration eight conditions to ease the US sanctions imposed on Syria.

According to the magazine “Al-Majalla,” one of the conditions includes “issuing a public official declaration prohibiting all Palestinian militias and political activities, and expelling their members, to assuage Israeli fears.”

A delegation from the US Congress visited Damascus on April 19, which included two Republican members: Cory Mills and Marlin Stutzman.

The members met with figures from the Syrian administration, led by the transitional Syrian president, Ahmed al-Sharaa.

Mills discussed the Iranian file with al-Sharaa in a meeting that lasted 90 minutes, according to Reuters, and he discussed with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani what he referred to as “transnational militias.”
