Mike McCarthy is now free to speak to anyone interested in hiring him as their new head coach.
According to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, the Dallas Cowboys are kicking their head coach to the curb:
Sources: Mike McCarthy is out as #Cowboys coach. The sides couldn’t agree on length of contract and McCarthy will pursue other opportunities. He leaves Dallas with a winning record and three playoff appearances. pic.twitter.com/MJzWvUlfjU
— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) January 13, 2025And just like that, Mike McCarthy is a coaching free agent.
McCarthy finishes his five-year term in Dallas with a 49-35 overall record. This run of success came after a 13-year stretch with the Green Bay Packers in which he went 125-77-2, won a Super Bowl, and was a constant thorn in the side of Bears fans. McCarthy’s Cowboys qualified for the playoffs three times — and did in style by winning 12 games in each of those campaigns. However, Dallas won just one playoff game during those trips. Frankly, those postseason losses the Cowboys suffered in those seasons are as memorable as they are meme-able.
What’s next for Mike McCarthy? What about the Cowboys? Bears?
On the one hand, there is a part of me that is surprised that the Cowboys parted ways with Mike McCarthy. After denying the Chicago Bears’ request to interview him for their job opening last week, I felt as if that could have been seen as a sign that the two sides would work toward a new deal. But on the other hand, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones operates in such odd ways that I should know better than to be surprised that he split from his head coach. The vibes are off in Dallas.
If I had a third hand, It would be weird, but I would use it to point out that the Dallas Cowboys entering the fray in search of a head coach could throw a wrench into things.
Even though they haven’t won a title since the mid-1990s and are more of a meme than a team right now, the Cowboys are a powerful brand with gobs of money it can throw at a candidate. This team was a 12-game winner just one year ago. The recent success could be something that might appeal to a coach whose other options are fixer-uppers and rebuild projects. And while I think there are enough quality candidates out there to make me feel confident that the Bears can snag one, that a new job has opened up complicates matters.
In other words: It would not surprise me at all if a report soon surfaces that the Cowboys are interested in hiring Ben Johnson. But we’ll cross that bridge when (if?) we get to it.
Now that Mike McCarthy is a coaching free agent, he is free to interview with any team. This could be notable for the Bears, whose opening reportedly intrigues the former Packers head coach. Former Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre recently shared a ringing endorsement of his former coach. And while Favre’s decision-making (all those poorly timed and ill-advised interceptions) isn’t known for being the best, he might not be wrong about McCarthy and the Bears as a fit.
