These Bears Are Playing For Something in Week 18 (And Other Regular-Season Finale Bullets) ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

The final Sunday of the NFL’s regular season is here. And while that means the end of the line for the 2024 Chicago Bears, it’s not as if there is nothing to play for in Week 18.

Rookie quarterback Caleb Williams needs 446 passing yards in order to surpass Erik Kramer’s single-season franchise passing yards record. Kramer’s record seemed more reachable before Williams put up just 122 passing yards in the team’s Week 17 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Williams hasn’t had a 400+ yard passing game this season, so it feels as if this record is safe — for now. Wide receiver DJ Moore needs 120 receiving yards to reach 1,000 this season. The Bears haven’t had a wideout go for back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons since Allen Robinson did it in 2019 and 2020. Since then, Chicaago’s football team has had just two 1,000-yard receivers: Darnell Mooney (2021) and DJ Moore (2023). Do you remember when projections forecasted the Bears to have three 1,000-yard receivers in 2024? Maybe A.I. isn’t everything it is as cracked up to be.

BN ON BLUESKY: Bears … Cubs … Bulls … Blackhawks

Running back D’Andre Swift needs 106 rushing yards to reach 1,000 yards on the ground this season. On the one hand, it would feel like an accomplishment to reach 1,000 rushing yards behind this offensive line and in this offensive scheme that feels as if it has been cobbled together. On the other hand, we had greater expectations than watching a RB who needs Game 17 to get to 1,000 rushing yards. More Swift: Last year, Swift averaged 4.7 yards per touch, scored six total touchdowns, and finished with 1,263 total yards in 16 games en route to a Pro Bowl appearance. This year, Swift is averaging 4.7 yards per touch, has accumulated 1,280 scrimmage yards, and scored five touchdowns. The numbers will look pretty similar at the end of the day. But it doesn’t feel like it. What gives? © Daniel Bartel-Imagn Images I’d like to see Kyler Gordon play well today. Let’s see him end the year on a high note and then possibly (down the line) discuss what an extension might look like for one of the league’s top nickel cornerbacks. Save for Ben Johnson, there hasn’t been a name I’ve been asked about more as a possible Bears head coaching candidate than Jon Gruden. And that was *BEFORE* his name started popping up in recent weeks as being interested in returning to the NFL. So, I wrote this and took a poll (which you can still vote in):

I'm just trying to see how folks reply to a poll question.Do you like the idea of Jon Gruden as #DaBears next head coach?

— Bleacher Nation Bears (@BN_Bears) January 4, 2025 For so many reasons, I just can’t see the Bears having an interest in Jon Gruden. The fit just doesn’t make sense. Besides, the Bears can go in so many other more intriguing directions than a retread coach who hasn’t won a playoff game in 20+ years. If you’re looking for something to root for today, here you go: Panthers to beat the Falcons Jaguars to take down the Colts Jets to top the Dolphins Raiders to knock off the Chargers In a world where all of those things happen *AND* the Bears lose to the Packers, then we could see the Chicago’s draft position jump into the top-5. I’d hate that a season that began with so much promise and hope ends with a pick in the top-5. It would also be annoying to lose to the Packers for the umpteenth time. Oh, and you should definitely be rooting the Lions to beat the Vikings. You might’ve missed a new Bears head coach candidate’s name springing up on Saturday. There are also rumors about how an Indianapolis Colts front office shakeup could impact the Chicago Bears. There is lots of stuff happening ahead of what I am already expecting to be a wild offseason.
