— Hayes Fawcett (@Hayesfawcett3) December 19, 2024Phillips is a huge addition for Mizzou as the Tigers prepare to build for 2025 and beyond. He’s a potential starter at safety next season for Eli Drinkwitz and Co. Phillips led all Virginia Tech safeties in snaps this season with 372, according to Pro Football Focus. He earned a tackling grade of 75.4 from PFF for the season, missing just 8 tackles all year.
He’ll join a Mizzou secondary that’s hoping to take a big step forward next season in Year 2 under defensive coordinator Corey Batoon. This season, Mizzou ranked 11th in the SEC with a pass defense efficiency rating of 130.9.
SEC fans may remember Phillips’ father, who bears the same name, from his time at Tennessee during the Phillip Fulmer era. He was a 4-year contributor for the Vols in the backfield from 1991-94.
