Rugby Championship match between Argentina and South Africa culminated in an exhilarating victory for the Argentine team, who triumphed 29-28. This outcome not only stunned the world champions but also reignited Argentina's aspirations for the championship title. The Springboks initially showcased their dominance by establishing a commanding 17-point lead within the first twelve minutes of play. However, Argentina's resilience became evident as they executed a remarkable comeback, scoring three tries in rapid succession to shift the momentum of the game .
Aphelele Fassi and Jesse Kriel before the hosts responded in impressive fashion.
Mateo Carreras, Pablo Matera, Joel Sclavi and Tomas Albornoz each went over the line to put the Pumas ahead in hot and humid conditions.
Cobus Reinach scored a try just before half-time to reduce Argentina's advantage to 26-22 at the break.
Penalties from Handre Pollard and Manie Libbok lifted the visitors in front again, only for an Albornoz penalty to put the home side 29-28 up.
Libbok had a late penalty chance to restore his side's lead, but sent his effort wide before Argentina held on for a famous win.
New Zealand and Australia, but they remain top of the table on 19 points.
South Africa, who had made 10 changes to their side after resting several regulars, scored tries via fullback Aphelele Fassi, centre Jesse Kriel and scrumhalf Cobus Reinach as they lost for the first time in this year’s championship.
The Springboks demolished Argentina in the first scrum and from the resulting attacking line-out, a simple backline move opened a hole in the home defence and Fassi was able to coast over the tryline.
They scored their second try after more excellent handling that put Kriel into a gap under the posts. Flyhalf Handre Pollard added a further three points, but when Argentina did finally get the hands on the ball, they scored a superb try.
The win adds a new scalp to Felipe Contepomi’s Pumas. In his rookie season in charge, Contepomi’s teams have beaten France, Uruguay, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. This suggests that Felipe Contepomi may be short-listed for World Rugby Coach of the Year Award.
