One member of the Memphis Grizzlies had a regrettable moment during Friday’s playoff-securing win.
In what appeared to be an unfortunate accident, Zach Edey had trouble controlling his mouth as spit flew towards a referee while he voiced his frustration at a no-call during the Grizzlies’ 120-106 win over the Dallas Mavericks.
In what looks like an accident Edey has drawn criticism for an incident with an officialGettyDuring the fourth quarter of the contest, Edey yelled at an official and let out a glob of spit towards him.
He then received a technical, but it’s unclear whether it was for the words that came out of his mouth or the spit.
The video that shows the exchange makes it look unlikely that it was intentional, and more so how passionate and intense his desperate plea was.
However, the moment became viral, and you could see Anthony Davis seeing the funny — and disgusting — side of the Memphis big man struggling to control the excess moisture coming out of his mouth.
Fans online were quick to react as well, with the overwhelming majority thinking it was an accident in the heat of the moment.
“Sometimes those big dudes just spit profusely when the talk,” one fan wrote on X.
“Need a mop for the slobber Edey just spit on the floor,” another fan posted.
“Edey just spit drool as he was yelling at a red & is p***** that he got a tech,” one fan posted.
“Zach Edey just got a tech for spitting when he spoke on accident. IM CRYING,” another fan wrote.
“Clearly an accident,” said someone else.

Edey himself put up a strong performance as he finished with 15 points, 11 rebounds, and 2 blocks on 7-9 shooting from the field.
After the game, he spoke on how incredible the atmosphere was for the playoff-esque matchup.
“It was great. My first ‘whoop that trick.’ I like that,” Edey said.
The season doesn’t get any easier for Memphis from here though, they will now face the top team in the NBA, the Oklahoma City Thunder, in the first round of the playoffs.
Memphis have lost nine straight games to the Thunder by an average of 16.9 points per game.
Although Jaren Jackson Jr, who led Memphis with 24 points against Dallas, suggested all of that doesn’t matter.
“A series is a series,” Jackson said.
“You’ve got to stay level-headed. Whether you win a game or lose a game, it really doesn’t matter until it’s over.”
