Madeline Soto's body being found days after her disappearance has sent shockwaves through the community. The 17-year-old girl was reported missing by her family last week, sparking a massive search effort that ended in heartbreak.
Madeline was described as a bright and kind-hearted young woman, with a promising future ahead of her. Her sudden and untimely death has left her loved ones devastated and searching for answers.
Her mother's boyfriend is suspected of moving her body and the case is a homicide investigation, Sheriff John Mina said at a news conference earlier in the day.
Madeline's body was found around 4:30 p.m. by Osceola County Sheriff’s Office search teams in a wooded area off Hickory Tree Road, the Orange County Sheriff's Office said in an update.
"Madeline’s family has been notified. We have no additional information to release at this time. Kissimmee PD is the lead agency in this homicide investigation. That work continues," the sheriff's office said.
Kissimmee police arrested Sterns for sexual battery and possession of child sexual abuse material.
Detectives wrote in a Facebook post that they “discovered those disturbing images and videos when they forensically examined Sterns’ phone. The review of his phone also revealed attempts to delete evidence.”
Detectives determined the documented sex crimes were committed inside the family’s apartment.
Mina said that as of Friday afternoon, Sterns has “not spoken to anyone” about the case.
“At 8:19, we have evidence that shows Stephan Sterns returning to the complex, and Madeline was visible in that vehicle,” Mina said. “We believe she was already dead at that time.”
Police believe Sterns had a flat tire around the time Madeline was last seen.

A heavily redacted affidavit detailing Sterns’ arrest released Thursday shows the family believed it was “unusual” for Madeline to be dropped off a few blocks away from school and for her not to be in touch with her family during the day Monday. A search through Sterns’ phone is said to have revealed child pornography, and he was arrested for the material and sexual battery, which the pictures appear to document.
