Inter Miami, the Major League Soccer (MLS) team, recently played a friendly match against El Salvador's national team, resulting in a goalless draw. This encounter showcased the talent and determination of both teams as they battled it out on the field.
The game started with high intensity as both teams displayed their attacking prowess. Inter Miami's forwards made several attempts to break through El Salvador's defense, but their efforts were thwarted by the opposing team's resilience. On the other hand, El Salvador showed great composure in their defensive play, denying Inter Miami any clear-cut chances.
For weeks, there had been unprecedented buzz about the match and the fact that Lionel Messi, considered by many to be the best player in the history of the sport, would play.
Messi jerseys, welcomed each Miami player as they took to the field of a sold-out Cuscatlán Stadium.
One of Inter Miami’s young, promising players left the pitch due to injury.
Facundo Farias left with an apparent knee injury, and needed to be carried off on a stretcher just before the 70th minute of action. Inter Miami will finish this match with 10 players on the pitch, instead of 11.
Farias entered the game in place of Messi when the second half began. Now, his availability is in question likely for the rest of Inter Miami’s preseason, and possibly this season, depending on the severity.
The 36-year-old Messi arrived in Miami last July and scored 10 goals in seven games. He led the club to its first-ever trophy by winning the Leagues Cup final on Aug. 19.
Inter Miami will play FC Dallas next Monday at the Cotton Bowl and then will travel to Saudi Arabia to face Al Hilal on Jan. 29 and Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr on Feb. 2.
Prior to Inter Miami's first competitive match of the coming season on February 21, Inter Miami will take flight on a three-week preseason tour that sees them cover 23,000 miles with visits to Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, Japan, and Dallas, Texas, in addition to this opener in the Caribbean.
Tata Martino has had a full offseason to consider how best to manage the workload of a squad full of aging stars headlined by 36-year-old Messi, who's joined by Sergio Busquets (35), Jordi Alba (34), and new signing Luis Suarez (36). It will remain a talking point all season, especially after Inter Miami fell short of the playoffs last year in part thanks to an injury to Messi that ignited the conversation about season-long congestion.
