One of the best meteor showers of the year peaks this week

Geminids meteor shower has been active since late November, and the shooting stars will ramp up to their peak Wednesday night into early Thursday.

The Geminids are considered to be one of the best and most reliable meteor showers of the year, according to NASA. Under ideal conditions — clear weather and away from light pollution — stargazers could see more than one meteor each minute streak across the night sky.

NASA said.

Geminids are known to be bright and fast meteors, often appearing yellowish or white in hue, though they can also be green, red and even blue.

For meteor enthusiasts, EarthSky recommends heading somewhere with a "dark, open sky," lying back and looking up. Experts note it will take about 20 minutes for viewers' eyes to adapt to the dark.

While most meteor showers originate from comets, the Geminids originate from an asteroid called 3200 Phaethon, according to NASA. Phaethon was discovered in 1983 and named after a character in Greek mythology who drove a chariot close to the sun, similar to the asteroid's path.

The shower starts at approximately 9 or 10 p.m., NASA says, and continues until dawn. It takes some time for eyes to adjust to the dark sky so “be patient.”

“Lie flat on your back with your feet facing south and look up, taking in as much of the sky as possible. After about 30 minutes in the dark, your eyes will adapt and you will begin to see meteors. Be patient – the show will last until dawn, so you have plenty of time to catch a glimpse,” NASA advises.

Geminid meteors can be seen in the sky per hour, at its peak. There might be long stretches without any meteors in the sky, so don’t expect them to be evenly paced.

The Geminid meteor shower is long in the making—requiring a full revolution of the Earth around the sun to pass through 3200 Phaethon’s tail; but it’s quick to pass,  peaking just from Dec. 13 and 14 this week. So grab the shy show during the fleeting time it’s here—or be prepared to wait another year for one of its dazzling performances.
