Prime Minister Mark Carney's Liberal Party achieved a significant victory amid heightened tensions with U.S. President Donald Trump. This electoral outcome reflects a surge in nationalist sentiment among Canadians, who are increasingly wary of Trump's trade policies and threats of economic warfare . Carney effectively framed his campaign as a defense of Canadian sovereignty against perceived American encroachment. He warned that Trump's rhetoric aimed to "break us so they can own us," galvanizing voters around the theme of national resilience .

After polls closed, the Liberals were projected to win more of Parliament’s 343 seats than the Conservatives. It wasn’t immediately clear, though, if they would win an outright majority — at least 172 — or would need to rely on one of the smaller parties to pass legislation.

Trump’s actions infuriated Canadians and stoked a surge in nationalism that helped the Liberals flip the election narrative and win a fourth-straight term in power.

US.

“We are over the shock of the American betrayal but we should never forget the lessons. We have to look out for ourselves. And above all we have to take care of each other,” he said.

Voters have returned Canada’s Liberal Party to power for a fourth consecutive term but it remains to be seen whether Carney has won a majority or will need coalition partners to govern.

Ian Laroque, a campaign volunteer who lives in Carney’s Ottawa electoral district, said: “I saw how Carney conducted himself and I felt like he was really a man who met the moment. He wasn’t a polished politician. But he’s the kind of person we need to lead the country right now. It’s not everyday you get an economist during an economic crisis.”

Monday’s vote was unusual in other ways too: for the first time in nearly 70 years, the two main parties were set to take more than 80% of the vote between them, reflecting the collapse of other smaller opposition parties including the NDP and the separatist Bloc Québécois.
