Mitt Romney announced Wednesday that he will not run for reelection to the Senate and called for a “new generation of leaders” as he criticized both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump.
In a video message, Romney outlined a range of what he described as critical issues, including rising national debt and the climate crisis, and said “neither President Biden nor former President Trump are leading their party to confront those issues.”
The Utah Republican’s decision will mark the departure of a distinctive voice from the Senate of a lawmaker willing to take on his own party. Romney, who was the 2012 GOP presidential nominee, has long been a rare member of the Republican party who has been an outspoken critic of Trump.
He said, "it's time for a new generation of leaders. They're the ones that need to make the decisions that will shape the world they will be living in."
Romney has spent more than 25 years working in public service, including as the Republican Party's nominee for president in 2012. His announcement comes as Republicans aim to retake control of the Senate next year.
Mitch McConnell, the Senate majority leader. McConnell has been indulgent of Trump’s deranged behavior over the past four years, but he’s not crazy. He knows that the election wasn’t stolen, that his guy lost fair and square. He sees the posturing by Republican politicians for what it is. He’ll want to know about this, Romney thinks. He’ll want to protect his colleagues, and himself.
Mitt Romney  sends his text: “In case you have not heard this, I just got a call from Angus King, who said that he had spoken with a senior official at the Pentagon who reports that they are seeing very disturbing social media traffic regarding the protests planned on the 6th. There are calls to burn down your home, Mitch; to smuggle guns into DC, and to storm the Capitol. I hope that sufficient security plans are in place, but I am concerned that the instigator—the President—is the one who commands the reinforcements the DC and Capitol police might require.”
“Political motivations too often impede the solutions that these challenges demand,” Romney said. “The next generation of leaders must take America to the next stage of global leadership.”
Romney vowed to keep working on a range of issues through the end of his term in January 2025.
“It is a profound honor to serve Utah and the nation,” he said, “and I thank you for giving me the opportunity to do so.”
