تحوّلت دعوة البطريرك الماروني بشارة الراعي لعقد مؤتمر دولي بشأن لبنان برعاية الأمم المتحدة، إلى مادة سجالية دخلت على خطها المرجعيات الدينية؛ ما أوحى أن الجدل أخذ بعداً طائفياً أكثر منه وطنياً.وظهر ذلك واضحاً من ردود الأفعال الصادرة عن المرجعيات الشيعية، لا سيما بعد موقف أمين عام «حزب الله» حسن نصرالله الذي وجد في الطرح «دعوة إلى الحرب»، وما قاله المفتي الجعفري الممتاز الشيخ أحمد قبلان، معتبراً أنها «إجهاز على صيغة لبنان وسيادته ليست صيحة موضة، ساعة نشاء نلبسها وساعة نشاء نخلعها».
