Jacob Rothschild, towering figure in the British art world, has died, aged 87

The British art world is mourning the loss of a true legend, Jacob Rothschild, who passed away at the age of 87. Rothschild was a towering figure in the art world, known for his keen eye and passion for collecting and supporting emerging artists. His influence extended far beyond just his personal collection, as he was also a generous patron of numerous museums and galleries.

Rothschild's impact on the British art scene cannot be overstated. His dedication to promoting creativity and innovation helped shape the cultural landscape of the country for decades. His legacy will live on through the countless artists he championed and the institutions he supported.

Rothschild began his career in the family bank, NM Rothschild & Sons, in 1963, before breaking away to start businesses and charitable organizations. His family paid tribute to him in a statement.

In a statement, the Rothschild Foundation said that it was "sad to announce the death of its Chairman, Lord Rothschild ... who made a profound difference to many areas of British life. He supported many causes, some close to his home in Buckinghamshire, others as far afield as Israel, Albania, Greece and the United States. He was committed to helping communities, the environment, education and above all, the arts. Jacob Rothschild was an extraordinary person, and his loss will be felt by many. The family is committed to continuing his legacy and the foundation which he loved and endowed. His daughter Hannah assumes the role of Chair of the Rothschild Foundation."

The Rothschild family has an estimated fortune of about £825m, according to last year's Sunday Times Rich List.

Lord Rothschild was described as "a superbly accomplished financier, a champion of the arts and culture, a devoted public servant, a passionate supporter of charitable causes in Israel and Jewish culture, a keen environmentalist and much-loved friend, father and grandfather," in a statement released by his family.

Lord Rothschild also held roles including deputy chairman at BSkyB Television, director of RHJ International, now known as BHF Kleinwort Benson Group, and was a member of the council for the Duchy of Cornwall for the then-Prince of Wales.

Sending his condolences to the Rothschild family, Sir Tony Blair said he would miss his friend immensely.

Rothschild was married for more than five decades to Serena, who died in 2019, and leaves three daughters and a son as well as a number of grandchildren.

In a statement on X, the Rothschild Foundation wrote: “He will be greatly missed by his family, his colleagues and his many friends.”

Rothschild sat as a cross-bencher in the House of Lords between April 1991 and November 1999 when legislation introduced by the then Labour government reformed the chamber and removed the majority of hereditary peers
