Sufjan new album Javelin is dedicated for late partner, light of my life Evans Richardson

Sufjan Stevens‘ new record “Javelin” (out today via Asthmatic Kitty) has been widely described as a breakup record for its themes of heartbreak and suffering. On Friday morning, the subject matter became much clearer when Stevens penned and uploaded a dedication of the album to his late “beloved” partner Evan Richardson, who passed away in April.

“This album is dedicated to the light of my life, my beloved partner and best friend Evans Richardson,” Stevens wrote alongside a picture of Richardson flashing a smile. “He was an absolute gem of a person, full of life, love, laughter, curiosity, integrity, and joy. He was one of those rare and beautiful ones you find only once in a lifetime—precious, impeccable, and absolutely exceptional in every way.”

Richardson was the chief of staff at New York’s Studio Museum in Harlem and chair of the American Alliance of Museums’ Accreditation Commission.

“This album is dedicated to the light of my life, my beloved partner and best friend Evans Richardson, who passed away in April ... He was one of those rare and beautiful ones you find only once in a lifetime — precious, impeccable, and absolutely exceptional in every way,” the “To Be Alone With You” singer wrote.

"Last month I woke up one morning and couldn't walk," Stevens wrote in a post. "My hands, arms and legs were numb and tingling and I had no strength, no feeling, no mobility."

He added that tests conducted at the Emergency Room concluded he had Guillain-Barre syndrome, which the Mayo Clinic describes as "a rare disorder in which your body's immune system attacks your nerves. Weakness and tingling in your hands and feet are usually the first symptoms."

Upon learning of Richardson’s death in the spring, Sufjan Stevens’ collaborator Nico Muhly wrote on Instagram, “There are no words to express adequately the depth of our loss and our gratitude for his life.”

Sufjan Stevens has used his Tumblr to share personal messages over the years, and he’s been particularly active on the platform in the lead-up to Javelin. He announced last month that he is undergoing intensive treatment for Guillain-Barré syndrome, and he’s shared regular updates on his status and progress as he lives with and receives care for the rare auto-immune disorder.
