Manchester United suffered defeat for the first time in this summer's pre-season, following a 3-1 reverse to Wrexham at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego.
A youthful-looking Reds side, barring the exception of the experienced Jonny Evans, lined up to face the League Two outfit in California. First-half goals from Elliot Lee and Aaron Hayden put our opponents in the driving seat, with Marc Jurado pulling one back for us just before the interval.
United battled for much of the second half with a player less, following a 47th-minute red card shown to Dan Gore, but the Wrexham did get on the scoresheet again, with Sam Dalby finding the net just over 20 minutes from full-time.
The game became combative just 12 minutes in when United’s Nathan Bishop clattered Mullin, who never saw the goalkeeper coming and left him a heap on the turf. The Wrexham star required treatment that included receiving oxygen.
Seven minutes passed before Mullin, still breathing via the mask, was able to stagger off, and a night that began as the latest chapter in the fairytale story of Wrexham under their Hollywood A-lister owners, Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, curdled for Mullin, who reportedly suffered a punctured lung.
United, being watched by first-team manager Erik ten Hag, pulled a goal back with the last kick of the first half when Marc Jurado's cushioned volley found the net after a pinpoint cross from Alvaro Fernandez.
But any hope they had of mounting a comeback were wrecked just a minute after half-time.
Dan Gore, impressive up until that point, lunged into a challenge on Andy Cannon and was sent off. Gore's studs were raised but he can count himself a little unlucky to be shown a straight red card.
Mullin stayed down and was attended to by physios who gave him oxygen while a stretcher was also brought out. However, the 28-year-old was able to walk off the pitch before he was replaced.
Parkinson said he was left "fuming" after the goalkeeper received only a yellow card for the challenge and revealed Mullin had been shifted to the hospital.
"It was a clumsy, reckless, challenge in a pre-season game and I'm not happy with it at all. I haven't seen the goalie and he's probably best steering clear of us for the time being because we're not very happy," he said after the game.
Wrexham supporters often serenade their team’s best player with a song called “Super Paul Mullin” and it came across in “Welcome to Wrexham” that the striker is the favorite player of Reynolds and McElhenney. McElhenney was at the match but Reynolds wasn’t.
There was no score when Mullin was hurt. Wrexham scored twice in a seven-minute span and led 2-1 at halftime.
