Independence Day causes traffic across the Commonwealth $1.776 a gallon on the Fourth of July

If you drove by Sheetz in Christiansburg on Tuesday afternoon, you could see a line of cars all the way down the road.

People were filling up their cars and other containers to take advantage of the lowest gas prices they’ve seen in months.

Customers said it was an opportunity they didn’t want to miss.

“People loving gas. Cheap, grab it while you got a chance,” Freddy Smith, a customer said.

Others noticed the business tactic behind the discount but still took advantage of the low price.

“Smart move. Especially right here off the interstate, you’re gonna have a lot more people coming through. You’re gonna be making your money back that you were taking off the original price,” Evan Matthis, another customer said.

This promotion is for July 4th and July 4th only, it started at midnight sharp and goes for the rest of the holiday, or while the promotional gallons last.

Cars, vans, and trucks, from all over have been lining up at Sheetz locations to fuel up and then head out to celebrate the 4th of July.

At Sheetz stations throughout Northeast Ohio, long lines of cars waited in traffic and crowded the pumps to take advantage of the promotion.

The average national price dipped just below $2 per gallon in March and April of 2020 when very few cars were on the road because of the pandemic, after climbing to nearly $3 per gallon a year earlier.

Competing gas stations on Tuesday were selling regular gas about $3.25 per gallon, with the national average for all grades in June at $3.68.

Diesel and ethanol-free gasoline did not qualify for the promotional price.

Sheetz employees tell 28/22 News it’s been packed all day, to the point where they’re seeing posts now saying there are traffic backups by Sheetz locations from everyone rushing to get their tank filled.

These are by far the lowest gas prices in the area and people are not taking it for granted if you have patience and some free time stop by.

28/22 News spoke to some customers and the wait times can range from 20 minutes to 45 minutes.
