It’s the address given in 1897 by William James, America’s foremost champion of pragmatism and the leading public intellectual of his day, at the unveiling in Boston of Augustus Saint-Gaudens’s Civil War memorial to Col. Robert Gould Shaw and his all-Black Regiment.
