A PROGRAM where drivers can receive 90% off car repairs has been introduced and only requires the answering of five simple questions to determine eligibility.

It aims to improve air quality for motorists in a major US state and ensure they’re able to enjoy a properly functioning AC system.

The California Cool Air Rebate Program, which offers financial assistance to eligible Californians, has been set up for those needing repairs on leaking R-134a refrigerant air conditioning systems in cars and light-duty trucks.

Eligible only for Californians, drivers must own a car manufactured between 1993 and 2019, or an older vehicle retrofitted with R-134a refrigerant.

Furthermore, they must meet income requirements – based on 225% of the 2025 federal income poverty level.

If those boxes are ticked, drivers then only need to answer five questions to check if they and their vehicle qualifies.

A full application can be done online or by mail and, if approved, will be followed up by a confirmation letter and the chance to bring a car into an auto shop for AC repairs.

The initiative aims to help low-income households afford often-expensive AC repairs, to not only help improve vehicle functionality and air quality, but also improve basic comfort to drivers.

Speaking on the Cool Air Rebate website, Brandon Stalnaker of Brandon’s Transmission and Automotive Repair, located in Bakersfield, California, said: “We have helped over six people within a couple weeks already to help fight this crazy California weather.

“Luckily, we are in the cool down stage, but at least they will be ready for next summer without any issues.

“The program has helped low income households tremendously. These A/C tickets and repairs can be pricey, so it helps them quite a bit.”

Claudia Ramirez, of Complete Auto Repair in Fresno, added: “Complete Auto Repair customers have been thrilled with the help the Cool Air Rebate Program provides.

“Many have held off on repairing their automotive A/C for years due to financial constraints, but this program has given them the opportunity to do so at an affordable cost.

“They are very grateful to qualify for the program through an easy application process.”

First, drivers will need a diagnostic test at a participating shop and if an AC unit needs a part replaced in addition to fixing the leak – this will also be covered.

Drivers, however, must provide a copy of their most recent pay stubs, dated within the last 6 months.

Or, they can submit a copy of their 2024 tax return, 2024 W-2, or a Social Security benefit letter.

If applicable, they must also have a current letter from the Department of Social Services, within the last 6 months, showing enrollment in Medi-Cal, CalFresh, or CalWORKs.

State benefit cards, such as Medi-Cal, Medicare, or Golden State, may also be accepted, but only if accompanied by income verification.

Car owners are reminded that the cost of AC repairs can vary depending on factors such as the make and model of their vehicle, as well as the type of refrigerant their car uses and the specific issue with the AC system, as well the region they live in and the labor rates of the repair shop.

Expert advice on prepping your car for summer

Dustin Piggot, the Service Manager at a Subaru Dealership with years of technincal experience, told The U.S. Sun in an exclusive interview which items drivers should have checked before temperatures rise:

Have a multi-point inspection performed. A paid inspection will prompt a technician to check vital systems like braking, power steering, and front and rear suspension for any leaks or malfunctions. They will also test the condition of the battery and check vital fluid levels and conditions. Cooling system. Before things heat up, drivers must have their cooling system inspected for proper coolant levels and condition, have radiator hoses evaluated, and have the radiator checked. Have your A/C system checked. If freon is low and needs charging or parts need to be replaced, it’s essential to address the issue before temperatures rise. Make sure your tires are appropriate for warmer weather. If you live in a climate that necessitates a dedicated winter tire, swap them with all-season or summer tires if possible to extend the life of the winter tire. Winter tires are softer and will wear out much quicker in warmer weather. Look at tread depth. Tires with low tread depth will make it more difficult to stop your car if you need to avoid an accident. Give your car some TLC. Before it gets too hot, Piggott says it’s important to give your car a good cleaning to wash away winter grime and dirt and treat your paint to a nice coat of wax to protect it from harsh UV rays and high heat. Many dealerships like his offer detailing and washing services.
