Local and state representatives comment on Trump’s tax cuts bill ...Middle East

WASHINGTON — Local and state House representatives are sharing their thoughts on President Donald Trump’s tax and spending cuts bill that’s on the brink of a final vote.

The House is set to vote on the 800-plus page bill on Thursday after it passed the Senate and an earlier version already passed the House. Trump has said he wants the bill on his desk by Friday night.

Rep. Joe Morelle spoke in D.C., criticizing the bill’s $1.2 trillion in cuts to Medicaid and food stamps, saying it will leave many New York residents uninsured.

“It takes $4.4 billion from New York’s health care system,” Morelle said. “It kicks 1.5 million New Yorkers off their health insurance. It raises health premiums by nearly $2,000 for some people. And it forces New York counties to pay $266 million more to keep families from going hungry.”

Rep. Nick Langworthy, who represents parts of Buffalo and the Southern Tier, spoke in support of the bill, saying the bill will help Americans to build independent lives with lower taxes.

“They want more people dependent on government and fewer people building independent lives. And Republicans will not let that happen,” Langworthy said.

Rep. Claudia Tenney, who has expressed support for the bill, says her office is expected to make a statement once the bill passes the House. Earlier this week, a group gathered outside of Rep. Tenney’s office in Canandaigua to protest against the Medicaid cuts in the bill. Protesters said the rollbacks will leave people in the community without access to healthcare.
